My interest in photography began at an early age when I had the opportunity to watch the photo development process in the darkroom at United Press International in Memphis, TN, where my father was the UPI bureau chief. My father inspired me to take up a career in journalism, which synergizes with my love of photography. I believe a photo can often eclipse the written word in expression and emotion.

Before the advent of digital cameras, I studied photography at Savannah College of Art and Design.  While working overseas, I was founding editor of Asian Home Gourmet, a food and lifestyle magazine published in Singapore; and Centered on Taipei, a magazine for the expatriate community in Taipei, Taiwan. My interest was in food and travel photography.

When I moved to South Carolina, I took up digital cameras and journeyed into nature photography.  My passion is photographing birds, which can be similar to photographing people, especially children, as they don’t sit still for very long.  I work to capture a bird’s personality, behavior, and beauty.  My photographic style is Asian influenced, where I prefer an uncluttered scene with negative space to allow the bird to be the star of the picture. Where possible, I like to shoot subjects with a shallow depth of field to achieve a background like a Monet painting. Now that the darkroom process is accomplished with editing software, I work to get the best shot through the lens, so I can spend less time sitting in a computer darkroom.

I also enjoy portrait photography and photographing still life. Recently, I have added photo collage to my portfolio. I am a member of the Aiken Artist Guild in South Carolina and exhibit at our annual shows. In 2018, I was juried into the National Association of Women Artists, Inc. (NAWA), headquartered in New York, where I have the opportunity to exhibit my photographs nationally. I am a founding member of the South Carolina Chapter of NAWA. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of photography through  mentor groups and have taught photography at the Society of Bluffton Artists Center for Creative Arts.

As a member of the Midlands Chapter of the Carolinas’ Nature Photography Association, I have the opportunity to share my passion for outdoor photography with like-minded North and South Carolina photographers.
